Their colors seem richer now against the fading greens of summer: deep wine, dusty rose, burnished peach. Hummingbirds still move through the garden. Wildflowers remain. The days are warm enough to belong to summer, even as the evenings begin asking for candlelight.
There is no need to name the next season too soon.

A Story
The flowers had been changing almost without notice. She brought a handful inside and set them where the afternoon light could find them. Nothing about the room had changed, and yet the color altered everything. The table looked warmer. The walls softer. Even the ordinary hour between afternoon and evening seemed to have acquired a little more depth.
She opened her journal and began to write. There was no announcement that summer was ending, no single day on which one season became another. Only small changes: a cooler morning, an earlier shadow, a flower becoming darker before it disappeared.
She wrote them down not because she wanted to hold the season still, but because she wanted to notice it while it was here.
